Celebrities React to Robert Redford’s Death

Hollywood is paying tribute to Robert Redford after his death at age 89. The legendary actor and director passed away on Sept. 16, 2025, at his home in Utah, according to a statement from his publicist Cindi Berger. Since the news of his passing broke, many celebrities have expressed their condolences and paid their respects to Redford.

Celebrities pay tribute to Robert Redford

Robert Redford has passed away at the age of 89, leaving fans, friends, and family in grief.

“Robert Redford passed away on Sept. 16, 2025, at his home at Sundance in the mountains of Utah — the place he loved, surrounded by those he loved. He will be missed greatly. The family requests privacy,” Cindi Berger said.

Meryl Streep, who starred with Redford in Out of Africa, said in a statement, “One of the lions has passed. Rest in peace my lovely friend.” Jane Fonda, his longtime co-star, told the New York Post, “It hit me hard this morning when I read that Bob was gone. I can’t stop crying. He meant a lot to me and was a beautiful person in every way. He stood for an America we have to keep fighting for.”

Demi Moore, who acted with him in Indecent Proposal, posted, “The world has lost an incredible actor, director, husband, father, friend… Robert’s legacy will live on forever in so many ways and I will carry the memories we share close to my heart.”

Leonardo DiCaprio called him an “actor, activist, passionate environmentalist, and champion of the arts,” adding, “His unwavering commitment to protecting our planet and inspiring change matched his immense talent. His impact will endure for generations to come.”

Ron Howard described him as an “Artistic Gamechanger” for his work as an actor, director, and founder of the Sundance Film Festival.

Marlee Matlin credited Redford for creating Sundance, which helped bring CODA to audiences. Elizabeth McGovern said he gave her first job in Ordinary People. Mark Ruffalo, Jamie Lee Curtis, Julianne Moore, and Ethan Hawke also shared tributes. Rita Wilson, Colman Domingo, Stephen King, Octavia Spencer, and Francis Ford Coppola praised Redford’s artistry, empathy, and lasting legacy.
