X-Men’s James McAvoy Punched by a Man in Toronto

A random man reportedly punched James McAvoy in a Toronto bar. This incident occurred while McAvoy was attending a premiere for his movie, California Schemin’. A source close to the actor revealed the details of the incident.

Here are the details on what happened in the bar and how McAvoy reacted.

James McAvoy reportedly gets attacked by a drunk man

James McAvoy was reportedly attacked recently by a man who was under the influence of alcohol. McAvoy was attending his directorial debut, California Schemin’, at the Toronto International Film Festival. He was in the city along with his wife, Lisa Liberati, on Saturday, September 6, 2025.

Two days after the movie premiere, McAvoy was enjoying his leisure time at Toronto’s Charlotte’s Room bar on Monday evening. According to a source close to McAvoy, who told PEOPLE, a random drunk punched the X-Men star. The staff were escorting him after he had drunk too much. Following the assault, everybody around him immediately intervened and escorted the man out of the bar. The incident reportedly took place around 11:55 p.m.

According to the source, the actor had not interacted with the stranger and had his back turned to him. “James was having a casual get-together with the producers of his movie and, as he later learned when speaking with the staff, there was a man who drank too much who was getting escorted out,” the source told PEOPLE. “James’ back was to him and the man just punched him.”

After being attacked with no serious injuries, the 46-year-old actor continued to enjoy his time and even laughed off the incident with his colleagues and bar staff.

McAvoy’s California Schemin’ is a musical biography with Samuel Bottomley and Séamus McLean Ross in the lead roles. It centers around the rap duo, Silibil N’ Brains, who conned the music industry by pretending to be popular American rap artists. To their success, they even got the chance to tour with popular artists like Eminem. The movie has received favorable reviews from the critics and is currently at 91% on Rotten Tomatoes.
