“Tears” is the second single from Carpenter’s latest studio album, Man’s Best Friend, which she released in August this year. The 2025 VMAs saw the song’s first-ever live performance as the star showcased an artful spectacle. The performance began with Carpenter appearing on the stage from a “manhole” in a stunning outfit, as the crowd erupted in cheer.
The singer wore a sparkling silver dress, black tights, and matching black heels. Carpenter then welcomed a group of dancers on stage, along with several famous drag queens like Denali and Lexi Love. She wowed the audience with an energetic dance routine as the drag queens emerged with signs and placards to show support for trans rights.
The signs displayed positive messages like “protect trans rights,” “support local drag,” as well as a cheeky note saying, “if you hate, you’ll never get laid.” At one point during the performance, Carpenter headed over to a phone booth for a swift outfit change. She emerged in a bejeweled bikini top for the second half of the show.
The atmosphere took a sultry turn as Carpenter joined her crew for a dance break. It led to the final part of the performance where the stage got soaking wet from the pouring rain. Carpenter embraced the wet look as she concluded the song, drawing roaring praise from the crowd.
Later in the night, the “Manchild” singer also received the award for Best Album for her 2024 release Short n’ Sweet. During her acceptance speech, she further advocated for the trans community, speaking up against the “criticism and discrimination and negativity.”
