It finally happened with Benny Safdieâs The Smashing Machine, where the former wrestler appears in a serious dramatic role. Speaking of this at the Venice Film Festival, he said, âThis transformation was something I was really hungry to do (via The Hollywood Reporter).â He continued, âI had been very fortunate to have the career that Iâve had over the years and to make the films that Iâve made, but there was just a voice inside of me, a little voice that said, âWell, what if I could do more â I want to do more and what does that look like?'â
Along with this big change, there also came a physical change. A much slimmer Dwayne Johnson shocked fans at the Venice Film Festival. Perhaps this was a part of playing the character in the new movie. It may also have been a measure he took to take on more roles like The Smashing Machine in the future.
