Fans hoping to see Blossom return to the small screen may be in for a letdown. The Big Bang Theory star Mayim Bialik has been working on a draft for a reboot with the show’s original creator, Don Reo. They had the script ready to go, and the project came close to getting a green light. However, Bialik has now shared a disappointing update on the long-rumored reboot of the ’90s sitcom.
Mayim Bialik confirms plans for a modern-day Blossom reboot have been rejected
In a recent Substack post, Bialik has confirmed that Disney executives have rejected the reboot of her 90s hit show, Blossom.
Aired between 1990 and 1995, Blossom followed the story of Blossom Russo, a smart and quirky teenager. She lived with her single father, Nick, and two brothers, Joey and Tony. The show followed her journey, dealing with issues like parents’ divorce, addiction, and mental health.
In the post, Bialik shared that she and Blossom creator, Don Reo, began developing a reboot shortly after The Big Bang Theory ended in 2019.
Bialik wrote, “He found our characters exactly where many of us find ourselves — funny, lost, wandering, meandering, and torn,” and called the script, “beautiful.”
Since Bialik was busy with Call Me Kat and Jeopardy!, the actor admitted that “we simply did not have the time to develop the show but tried to lock it in quickly.”
When the two approached Disney executives, the studio that owns the rights to the show, they showed initial enthusiasm. However, industry mergers brought new executives into the picture, and with them, a different answer. Bialik shared, “For no particular reason, we were told ‘no.’”
She continued to talk about acquiring the rights to the show, but they were denied. Bialik said, “We were told Disney reserves the rights in case they ever want to do a reboot of Blossom.”
In conclusion, the actress admitted that the experience has reduced her desire to continue acting. “Blossom felt like my last attempt to try and assert myself as an actress.” Still remaining hopeful, she concluded, “I hope there will be more to this story someday.”
