Ryan Reynolds, who co-owns the Wrexham A.F.C. team with Rob McElhenney, recently shared an interesting detail about his involvement in the football club’s management. The pair purchased it in 2021 via Wrexham Holdings LLC, owned by their company, RR McReynolds Company LLC. The club has since hit a major milestone. It has become the first team in the history of English football’s top five divisions to obtain three successive promotions.
How involved are Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney in Wrexham’s decisions?
The Welcome to Wrexham stars recently attended the Stok Cae Ras on August 16, 2025. At the event, Wrexham A.F.C. played a home game in English football’s second tier. This was the club’s first home game since May 1982.
Wrexham, unfortunately, lost the match to West Bromwich Albion, who secured a 3-2 win against the former. Thus, the team was left without a championship point after two games.
Ahead of the match, Sky Sports interviewed Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. The two explained their role in the Wrexham A.F.C. team’s management and decisions. “We have a very hands-off management style,” the Deadpool & Wolverine actor told the outlet. He shared that their job was to simply “listen, learn, and tell the story.”
“And that is a great position for any ownership group to be in, to really just be there to support and tell the story,” Reynolds added. He also stated that he and McElhenney did not “make football decisions.” The Adam Project star explained that it was a “great gift” as it allowed them to “have relationships” with their players, unlike owners of other football clubs.
“So we have a relationship with every single one of our players,” Reynolds shared. Meanwhile, McElhenney noted that it was “interesting” to receive awards when people would compliment him and Reynolds for their successful work with the club. He then clarified that they had no input when it came to decisions “on the pitch.”
“We’ve got our very specific job,” he added. “Which is to be clowns and to tell the story as best we can.” The It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star continued, “But also to be as respectful as we possibly can to what Phil [Parkinson] does on the pitch and what the executive team, Michael [Williamson], Shaun [Harvey], and Humphrey [Ker], and everybody does off the pitch.”
Rob McElhenney concluded, “We just have an incredible team and we just get to sit back and be fans and document the process.”
