Two decades after Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston split up, the Friends star has dished on the “love triangle” that became the centerpoint of media scrutiny. In a new interview, the Emmy winner even revealed how the public exposure to the private events affected her “personally.”
Jennifer Aniston shares thoughts on Brad Pitt’s love triangle
In a new Vanity Fair feature, Jennifer Aniston opened up about her marriage to Brad Pitt that ended in 2005. Only months after the much-publicized breakup, the Se7en star was rumored to be dating Angelina Jolie, which created the “love triangle” narrative in media.
Aniston shared how the “juicy reading for people” in tabloids left an impact on her. The Morning Show actress noted, “It’s a shame that it had to happen, but it happened. And boy did I take it personally.” Speaking of the tabloid culture, she further added, “They were sort of building us up and then tearing you down.”
The Murder Mystery star, who was 36 at the time of her split with Pitt, also reflected on her personal belief system. She gushed, “I didn’t have a strong enough constitution to not get affected by it. We’re human beings, even though some people don’t want to believe we are. They think, You signed up for it, so you take it. But we really didn’t sign up for that.”
Meanwhile, Pitt and Anniston met in 1998. The Fight Club actor proposed to the actress within a year of dating. They tied the knot in Malibu on July 29, 2000. The extravagant wedding reportedly saw 200 guests and four bands.
Within five years of their marriage, the couple split up. They released a joint statement that read, “We would like to announce that after seven years together we have decided to formally separate. For those who follow these sorts of things, we would like to explain that our separation is not the result of any of the speculation reported by the tabloid media” (via PEOPLE).
Later, Pitt started dating Jolie, whom he got close with while filming Mr. & Mrs. Smith in 2003. Jolie shared in an interview that the duo were not romantically involved with each other while filming the movie. She told Vogue, “Because of the film, we ended up being brought together to do all these crazy things, and I think we found this strange friendship and partnership that kind of just suddenly happened” (via The Hollywood Reporter).
