In an interview with Vanity Fair, Jennifer Aniston spoke at length about losing her friend and Friends co-star Matthew Perry, who passed away unexpectedly in 2023 at the age of 54. Perry had been open for years about his struggles with alcohol and drug addiction.

Aniston recalled the toll those battles took on him and those close to him. She said, “We did everything we could when we could. But it almost felt like we’d been mourning Matthew for a long time. Because his battle with that disease was a really hard one for him to fight.” She added, “As hard as it was for all of us and for the fans, there’s a part of me that thinks this is better. I’m glad he’s out of that pain.”

Her remarks followed the release of the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s findings. It listed the acute effects of ketamine, drowning, coronary artery disease, and buprenorphine as the contributing factors in Perry’s death. He was discovered unresponsive in a hot tub at his Los Angeles home on October 28, 2023. The investigation into his death resulted in several arrests. This included the individuals accused of providing him with ketamine, a doctor who had worked with him, and his live-in assistant.

Not long after his passing, Aniston shared a deeply personal tribute on Instagram. “Having to say goodbye to our Matty has been an insane wave of emotions that I’ve never experienced before,” she wrote in November 2023. The Friends star added, “We all experience loss at some point in our lives. Loss of life or loss of love. Being able to really SIT in this grief allows you to feel the moments of joy and gratitude for having loved someone that deep.”
