Emma Stone Says She’s ‘Straight-Up Bald’ & Wore Wigs to Hide It

Emma Stone, who shaved her hair for her upcoming film, Bugonia, recently revealed that she wore wigs to conceal her bald head. The science fiction black comedy film is helmed by Yorgos Lanthimos, with whom Stone has previously collaborated on three projects. The film is scheduled to premiere at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival on August 28, 2025. It will then drop in theaters across the United States on October 24, 2025. Besides starring in the film, Stone serves as a producer.

Emma Stone recently gave an interview, where she discussed shaving her head for Bugonia and subsequently wearing a wig to conceal her baldness. In the film, Stone, who plays a pharmaceutical CEO, is kidnapped by a pair of conspiracy theorists (Jesse Plemons and Aidan Delbis). The duo concludes that her hair must be removed, leading to them shaving her head with an electric clipper.

The 36-year-old actress loved going bald, telling Vogue that there was “no better feeling in the world.” She described her “first shower” after shaving her head as “amazing.”

However, the La La Land star admitted she cried before shaving her head. This is because she remembered how her mother, Krista, lost all her hair during her breast cancer treatment. “She actually did something brave,” Stone stated. “I’m just shaving my head.” Stone revealed that her mother envied her upon finding out that she shaved her head. “My mom was like, ‘I’m so jealous. I want to shave my head again,'” Stone recalled.

The Eddington actress, who revealed she had worn wigs to hide her baldness, admitted she was annoyed when she couldn’t go on outings with her bald look. “I was bummed I wasn’t going out with it,” the Academy Award winner shared. “Just straight-up bald. I think that would have been fun.”

Stone’s close friend and fellow actress, Jennifer Lawrence, was initially not keen on the former shaving her head. In an email to Vogue, The Hunger Games actress — who wasn’t fond of Stone’s Billie Jean King haircut for Battle of the Sexes — wrote, “I really didn’t want her to shave her head, I had already lived through the Billie Jean King haircut.”

However, Lawrence accepted Stone’s bald cut after seeing it. “Honestly, she looked beautiful,” she shared. “She pulled it off.”
