Dr. Phil Will Buy ‘Jeans’ To Support Sydney Sweeney Amid Controversy

In a recent interview, Dr. Phil showed support for Sydney Sweeney amidst the controversy surrounding her American Eagle ad campaign. He also criticized the outrage surrounding the campaign. The campaign, which first launched in July 2025, garnered considerable attention due to its slogan, “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans.” The slogan received widespread criticism due to its play on the words “genes” and “jeans.” Subsequently, the apparel company was accused of promoting eugenics and white supremacy.

Dr. Phil discussed the recent rumors claiming that Sydney Sweeney is a registered Republican and the actress’ controversial American Eagle advertisement during his appearance on Bill Maher’s show on August 9, 2025. Maher stressed how the issue was reported on as a scandal. The host said that someone being a Republican was not a slur.

Dr. Phil concurred with Maher’s sentiments and criticized the backlash surrounding Sweeney’s American Eagle ad. “For people to go crazy over that ad and to, to say that they say she’s got good genes, and for them to say that’s the equivalent of the Holocaust… That this is the same as all of that is an absolute insult,” Dr. Phil shared.

The television personality continued, “Six million people were killed. Six million Jews were massacred and murdered, and they equate that to a blue jeans ad for a Hollywood actress? What an insult.” He said that he would support the actress and the brand by purchasing the jeans “for every woman” in his family.

Maher had earlier called out critics of Sweeney’s American Eagle advertisement on his show. He mocked their hypocrisy, stating how they would claim “there’s no such thing as good genes,” only to “go on Tinder and swipe left on every bald guy.” (via Fox News)

US Weekly previously reported via a source that the Euphoria actress was not letting the outrage affect her. “Sydney thinks this whole thing has been blown out of proportion,” the source alleged. “She’s focusing her energy on work, including being back on set with her Euphoria family.”
