Instagram’s New Map Feature Causes User Outrage & Confusion

Instagram has added another feature that is causing huge outrage amongst most of its users- the map feature. The latest update on the social media platform has added this rather offbeat feature, where the app lets friends and followers see where a particular person is. This map feature is allegedly to help people connect more easily, but many have not found this to be very tasteful.

How Internet is reacting to Instagram’s map feature

Instagram unveiled its new map feature in its latest update, which allows followers to see where the particular accounts are in real time. Moreover, if they tag a location in their content, it will appear on the map for 24 hours to their followers.

With increasing digital dominance, there has been a wave of people actively trying to share less with the world. But this feature seems to have exactly done the opposite, even a step or two forward from the realm of acceptable.

Netizens’ reactions to this have been very negative. Most users slammed this feature and provided detailed instructions to turn this off. In essence, many feel like this is a violation of their privacy, while others have called it unnecessary.

An X (formerly Twitter) user wrote, “This is a weird feature added to Instagram via an update it now shows your location to any and everyone who follows you. To turn it off: Settings and Activity>Story, Live and Location>Location Sharing Instagram Map>No one,” giving step-by-step instructions to shut this off.

Meanwhile, the majority of online reactions echoed this sentiment. “Instagram is stupid as hell for that new map feature,” another user wrote. “I can’t think of a worse feature than ‘Maps’ that Instagram could have released,” a third user remarked.

Hence, it is quite clear that Instagram’s new feature is not at all welcome, and it may also lead to some dangerous consequences. Nevertheless, it is yet unknown whether the users’ reaction will prompt Meta to make changes.
