Why DC Fans Think The Batman Writer Is Working on New DCU Project

Mattson Tomlin, the co-screenwriter of the upcoming The Batman Part II, seems to have recently hinted that he’s part of a new mystery superhero project. Notably, Tomlin also contributed to the script of 2022’s The Batman but didn’t receive credits for it.

Tomlin was recently asked by a fan on social media what other comic book superhero he would be interested in writing besides Batman. The screenwriter gave a cryptic and extremely interesting answer, posting, “You’ll see.”

Understandably, this has led to a lot of speculation in the fandom, with people wondering if this means that Tomlin is working on a different superhero project besides The Batman Part II. James Gunn and Peter Safran may have recruited Tomlin for a project as part of their fledgling DC Universe (DCU). It’s equally possible that Tomlin may have been referring to a new superhero that will appear in The Batman sequel. After all, there has been a lot of speculation on whether a member of the Bat family will be in The Batman Part II.

Tomlin has previously penned the scripts of Project Power and Little Fish. He wrote and directed 2021’s Mother/Android and created the 2024 Netflix animated series Terminator Zero.

Notably, Tomlin didn’t receive credit on The Batman script following an arbitration by the Writers Guild of America (WGA). In a 2024 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Tomlin admitted that it was “a painful thing to have happen.” He added, “I put a lot of time and a lot of heart in. I had a really, really great time working with Matt [Reeves, the co-writer and director] on that first movie.” Tomlin proceeded to clarify that he wasn’t “s—-ed over” on the project, before disclosing Matt Reeves eventually reached out to ask if he wanted to be involved in the sequel from the beginning.

The Batman Part II comes out in U.S. theaters on October 1, 2027.
