Jennifer Anniston says Friends cast was Matthew Perry even before death

Jennifer Aniston reflected on her late Friends co-star Matthew Perry’s struggles with addiction.

“We did everything we could when we could,” Aniston said in a recent Vanity Fair interview. She noted that Perry himself described his friends’ support in his memoir, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing. She added, “It almost felt like we’d been mourning Matthew for a long time because his battle with that disease was a really hard one for him to fight. As hard as it was for all of us and for the fans, there’s a part of me that thinks this is better. I’m glad he’s out of that pain.”

Perry died on October 28, 2023, at the age of 54. In December 2023, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office identified “the acute effects of ketamine” as the cause of Perry’s death. It also cited drowning, coronary artery disease, and the effects of buprenorphine as contributing factors. Authorities found his body in the hot tub of his Pacific Palisades home.

Perry gained fame for portraying Chandler Bing on Friends. He openly discussed his long and public battle with substance abuse in interviews and his memoir. He faced multiple stints in rehab and significant health complications over the years.

After Perry’s death, investigators began tracing the source of the ketamine in his system. Recently, Dr. Salvador Plasencia, one of the doctors accused of supplying Perry with the drug, pleaded guilty to four counts of distribution. Under the plea deal, Plasencia faces up to 40 years in prison and fines exceeding $1 million.

Aniston’s remarks joined other tributes from Perry’s co-stars, highlighting his talent.
