Tom Holland recently shared an interesting detail about the fishnet he wore for the popular Lip Sync Battle performance in 2017. It saw the Spider-Man actor facing off against his fiancée, Zendaya. For the event, Holland did lip-sync performances on Nelly’s “Ride Wit Me,” Gene Kelly’s “Singin’ in the Rain,” and Rihanna’s “Umbrella.” Meanwhile, Zendaya performed Erykah Badu’s “Tyrone” and Bruno Mars’ “24K Magic.”
Tom Holland reveals whose fishnets he was wearing during Lip Sync Battle
In a recent appearance on Gordon Ramsay’s Scrambled, Tom Holland reflected on key moments in his career, most notably his Lip Sync Battle performance that went viral back in 2017, and the creative process behind it.
Ramsay asked Holland if the fishnets he wore for his performance in Rihanna’s “Umbrella” song were his mother Nikki’s. To this, Holland responded, “They were my granny’s, actually.”
The Crowded Room actor later revealed that at the time of his lip-sync performance, people were unaware that he could dance — a talent he had kept secret from them. “And I came out with a bang,” he added.
The 29-year-old star also recalled the time he and Zendaya discussed the lip-sync battle, and how they initially decided to “take it easy.” “That was the agreement,” Holland shared. “That it was like, ‘I’m not gonna do anything crazy, you’re not gonna do anything crazy, we’re just gonna keep it nice and easy breezy,'” he added.
Further, Holland discussed the creative team’s ideation process for his performance on Rihanna’s “Umbrella.” He noted that the ideas had gotten “crazier and crazier” during rehearsals. “And then the rain machine came in,” Holland added. “And then I was like, ‘F— it, I wanna wear fishnets and do this, and I want a wig and a quick-change,'” he further stated.
Holland later revealed how his father, author and comedian Dominic, was uncomfortable about the idea of his performance.
“When I told my dad, he was like, ‘Son, I don’t think that’s a good idea. I don’t think you should do that,'” Holland stated. The Spider-Man star noted that his father was simply concerned about the prospect of him becoming “too famous too quickly.” He added, “So he was really keen for me to not do extra TV shows that I didn’t have to do to try and maintain that part of my childhood.”
