Tom Holland has opened up about a moment that turned into one of the most viral performances of his career, and it wasn’t from a movie set. The actor reflected on his 2017 Lip Sync Battle performance during a recent cooking segment with Gordon Ramsay, admitting the viral clip continues to “haunt” him to this day.

While preparing a spicy fried chicken sandwich with Ramsay at the Gordon Ramsay Academy, the actor looked back at the unforgettable performance, where he famously danced to Rihanna’s “Umbrella” in full costume, including fishnets and a wig. The performance originally aired while Holland was promoting Spider-Man: Homecoming with co-star Zendaya, who is now his partner.

He shared that he and Zendaya had initially agreed to keep their performances “easy breezy,” but things escalated during rehearsals. “The creative team…pitched this ‘Umbrella’ thing, and as we were rehearsing, it got crazier and crazier,” Holland said. “Then the rain machine came in… and…I was like, ‘F— it, I wanna wear fishnets and do this, and I want a wig and a quick-change,’” he added.

However, not everyone was immediately on board with the plan, as his father, Dominic Holland, advised against it. Despite the initial doubts, the performance went on to become a cultural phenomenon. Yet, the actor finds its lasting popularity amusing and “ridiculous.” “Honestly, of all the pieces of work I’ve done… the Lip Sync Battle is the thing that everyone brings up,” Holland said, adding, “It’s never Spider-Man, it’s never any of my other movies — it’s always Lip Sync Battle. It haunts me.”

Fans can next see Holland swinging back into action in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, set to release on July 31, 2026.
