‘Was Sydney Sweeney in the Military?’ trend explained

Fans are interested in knowing why the phrase “Was Sydney Sweeney in the military?” is trending online. The aforementioned phrase appears to have gained traction after a video clip of the actor at a shooting range started circulating online. It was originally shared by Taran Tactical, a California-based company that produces weapons and accessories.

In the video, Sweeney appears to finish a gun range course in 9:21 seconds, seemingly impressing the people who are present there. As for the answer to the question about whether she was ever in the US military, it seems not to be the case.

Sweeney was born in Spokane, Washington, and grew up in North Idaho along the Washington border. She reportedly participated in various sports and later became interested in acting.

Although Sweeney never served in the US military in real life, she did portray Reality Winner, a US Air Force veteran and former NSA translator, in the 2023 HBO crime-drama feature Reality, which received a Peabody Award in the entertainment category in 2024.

Taran Tactical may have shared the above-mentioned post likely as a response to the backlash around the American Eagle ad, which was released last month and reportedly garnered controversy due to the wordplay on “jeans” and “genes.”

In August, the company put out a statement about the backlash. “‘Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans’ is and always was about the jeans,” the statement reads. “Her jeans. Her story. We’ll continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way. Great jeans look good on everyone.”
