The online reaction to the ad, as well as the White House’s defense on the matter, seems to indicate that fans are sufficiently angry about this.

With fans calling out the Madame Web actress and American Eagle for their blatant white representation, especially because of the tagline, “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans,” the White House has issued a response that has also sparked some backlash.
Donald Trump’s White House communications chief, Steven Cheung, called the outrage “dense” and “moronic.” He wrote in an X (formerly Twitter) post, “Cancel culture run amok. This warped, moronic, and dense liberal thinking is a big reason why Americans voted the way they did in 2024. They’re tired of this bullshit.”
Sweeney’s American Eagle ad was originally a wordplay on “jeans” and “genes.” But in doing so, it has stirred up a major controversy with allegedly racist undertones. Many called out the ad because of its approach. Some also accused it of promoting White Supremacy. After Cheung’s comments, there was further backlash on the subject.
A Reddit user wrote, “Now that the White House has solved minor issues like free healthcare, they can focus on important matters like defending Sydney Sweeney’s American Eagle commercial.” This saw several reactions.
“If she doesn’t respond after the White House basically claimed her as part of their movement and Elon Musk retweeted something about how this ad campaign of hers is proof that he succeeded in ‘defeating woke,’ I will have to assume that she’s totally cool with being MAGA’s sweetheart,” another user wrote as a response.
Meanwhile, a third user wrote, “Well, she’s on an ad promoting eugenics, sounds like the type to align herself with nazis.”
On the other hand, Sydney Sweeney has yet to say anything about the controversy surrounding her American Eagle ad.
