Who Is Foo Fighters’ New Drummer, Ilan Rubin?

Foo Fighters has onboarded a new drummer, Ilan Rubin. This development occurs just two months after they let drummer Josh Freese go. This change happened ahead of the band’s planned shows in Jakarta, Tokyo, Singapore, and Osaka in October, followed by a show in Mexico City in November. Freese joined the group in 2023, one year after drummer Taylor Hawkins’ demise. At the time of his departure, Freese had revealed via social media that the band did not give him a concrete reason as to why he was let go. He simply stated that they told him they were heading in a different direction with their drummer.

So, who is Ilan Rubin, the new drummer of the Foo Fighters? Here’s what you need to know.

Who is Foo Fighters new drummer?

Ilan Rubin is a musician, producer, songwriter, composer, and artist who has been a touring drummer of Nine Inch Nails since 2009. In 2020, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Thus, he became the youngest musician — since he was 32 at the time — to achieve that honor.

Besides Nine Inch Nails, Rubin has also played for other music groups like Angels & Airwaves, Lostprophets, and Paramore. He has also collaborated with prominent film composer, singer, and songwriter Danny Elfman.

Moreover, Rubin has also embarked on a solo career and released multiple singles. These include Chaos in Motion, Talk Talk Talk, 24HR Fix, Living in the Underworld, and Don’t Panic.

Rubin has also expanded his music portfolio to include film soundtracks. He scored for films like Bobcat Moretti and Monsters of California.

As Rubin joins Foo Fighters, Freese will return to Nine Inch Nails, a group he had been a part of between 2005 and 2008. The latter band confirmed Freese’s return via Instagram.

It’s currently unknown if Rubin has joined Foo Fighters on a full-time basis or as a touring drummer. An insider told THR that Rubin had committed to Nine Inch Nails through this year, but informed Trent Reznor that he “accepted a job with another band.” (via The Hollywood Reporter)
