Jason Momoa is turning heads with a dramatic transformation and a major career move. The Aquaman star shaved off his iconic beard for the first time in six years, revealing his clean-shaven look in a video that quickly went viral online. The change comes as he prepares to reprise his role as Duncan Idaho in Dune: Part Three.
Here’s how Momoa unveiled the look, what it means for his return to the sci-fi franchise, and how it ties into his ongoing environmental mission.
Jason Momoa reveals his new shaved look
Jason Momoa, 45, shared a video on Instagram on July 30 showing himself trimming off his trademark facial hair, stating, “God damnit, I hate it!” He said the decision marked a new chapter as he returns to play Duncan Idaho in Dune: Part Three, following his absence from the franchise’s second installment.
Momoa also used the moment to promote sustainability. In his caption, he wrote, “Haven’t shaved in six years, and here we are again.” He explained that the beard shave coincides with further developments in his eco-friendly water company, Mananalu. “I launched @mananalu to help eliminate single-use plastic,” he said. “Now, we’re taking it even further, partnering with our team at @Getboomerangwater to bring in a closed-loop system that sanitizes and bottles water onsite.”
Calling the clean shave a “kickoff,” he added, “Only for you,” tagging Dune director Denis Villeneuve. The actor emphasized the goal of ending plastic waste, saying, “This is the future, and we’re starting in Hawai’i. Let’s get rid of single-use plastic. For our children and for our planet.”
Momoa’s son, Nakoa-Wolf, 16, has also been cast in Dune: Part Three as Leto II, son of Paul Atreides and Chani. “A rude awakening is what he’s in for,” Momoa told Extra, commenting on his son’s debut in the workforce. “It’s going to be good.”
The actor’s girlfriend, Adria Arjona, responded to the video with heart emojis. Momoa previously shaved in 2019 during the launch of Mananalu, saying goodbye to roles like Drogo, Aquaman, Declan, and Baba. At the July 18 premiere of Chief of War, he appeared with Nakoa-Wolf, daughter Lola, and Arjona, wearing matching family capes.
