Ozzy Osbourne’s loved ones are set to honor the rock icon with both a public procession and a private funeral. Just weeks after his farewell performance with Black Sabbath, Osbourne’s hometown of Birmingham will pay tribute with a ceremonial procession through the city.
Ozzy Osbourne’s fans to head to Birmingham streets for his funeral procession
Following the passing of Ozzy Osbourne on July 22 at the age of 76, his family is preparing both a public farewell and a private funeral.
A source close to the Osbourne family told PEOPLE that plans are underway for a private funeral intended to celebrate his life. The source said, “They’re very grateful for the special family time they had together before Ozzy passed. They’re planning a small, private funeral that will be a celebration of his life. Ozzy would never want a mope-fest.” His wife Sharon and their children are said to be deeply moved by the global outpouring of support and affection.
In addition to the private service, the city of Birmingham is preparing a public tribute to honor Osbourne. On Wednesday, July 30, a funeral procession will take place, giving residents and fans a chance to pay their respects. As reported by the Birmingham City Council, a hearse carrying Osbourne’s body will travel through the city starting at 1:00 p.m. local time (12:00 GMT).
The procession will make its way along Broad Street and stop at the Black Sabbath Bridge and memorial bench. It has become a growing memorial space filled with floral tributes and fan messages since his death.
The event will feature live music from local ensemble Bostin’ Brass Band, joined by other Birmingham musicians. A tram named in Osbourne’s honor, originally unveiled in 2016, will also be parked along the route near Birmingham Library. The Osbourne family is contributing financially to help organize the event (via BBC).
Fans unable to attend in person will still be able to witness the tribute, as a live stream of the Black Sabbath bench will remain active during the event.
