Many also want to know how his contributions shaped the legacy of Iron Maiden.

Paul Mario Day cause of death explained

Paul Mario Day, the original Iron Maiden singer, died at the age of 69 following a private battle with cancer.

The English vocalist passed away peacefully at his home in Australia on July 29, 2025. His former band, More, paid tribute in a heartfelt message posted on Facebook. “We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of the great MORE vocalist Paul Mario Day. Paul was a huge part of the NWOBHM from his time in an early version of Iron Maiden, and of course his fantastic performance on the Warhead album. We send our deepest condolences to Paul’s family and friends and also the many fans around the world who love his music,” the statement read.

Day joined Iron Maiden in 1975 when bassist Steve Harris was still forming the band’s original lineup. Though his tenure was short-lived, lasting less than a year, Day contributed during the band’s formative pub gig era. He left after reportedly being criticized for a lack of stage presence.

Although Day never recorded with Iron Maiden, he claimed to have co-written “Strange World.” This track appeared on the band’s debut album in 1980. He expressed frustration over not receiving credit, saying it still haunted him.

After leaving Iron Maiden, Day led bands like More and Wildfire, and later joined Sweet. He performed alongside guitarist Andy Scott and drummer Mick Tucker. While Day never gained the fame of successors like Paul Di’Anno or Bruce Dickinson, his role as the first Iron Maiden singer remains a critical chapter in the band’s history.
