Luka Doncic Says ‘Summer Was Little Bit Different’ Amid Physical Transformation

Having faced immense criticism for his seemingly subpar physique this past season, NBA prodigy Luka Doncic has now flipped the script, adopting an intense fitness routine to prepare for the 2025-26 season. In a recent interview, the physiotherapist of the Slovenian professional, Javier Barrio, detailed how Doncic has approached the offseason with a renewed determination to attain peak fitness.

Despite his superlative performances on the court, Luka Doncic has found it hard to keep up with more athletic players, with many even claiming that the Dallas Mavericks only traded him to the Los Angeles Lakers earlier this year due to his underwhelming fitness. However, recent accounts shared by the 26-year-old point guard, as well as his fitness team, suggest that the player is giving it his all to enter the upcoming campaign with the Lakers at his physical best.

Javier Barrio revealed that Doncic has been engaging in two workouts a day, under the supervision of his trainer Anze Macek, right after the Lakers’ season-ending loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves earlier this year. He trained vigorously with Macek by doing lifting, mobility, and court drills, and only taking a day off on Sundays.

In addition to the intensive training regimen, Doncic also adopted a gluten-free, low-sugar diet to realize his goal of attaining his dream physique. Infamous for his love for beer and hookah, the five-time NBA All-Star instead switched to a diet that includes at least 250 grams of protein and one almond milk–fueled shake a day.

Talking about how this summer was a sharp contrast to past off-seasons for him in an interview with Men’s Health magazine, Doncic said, “Every summer I try my best to work on different things. Obviously, I’m very competitive. This summer was just a little bit different, you know. It kind of motivated me to be even better.”
