Jamie Lee Curtis talks about retiring from Hollywood
Jamie Lee Curtis opened up about her decision to “self-retire” after witnessing the struggles of her parents, Janet Leigh and Tony Curtis. She explained how their later-career rejections shaped her perspective on fame and longevity in the entertainment business. “I have been prepping to get out, so that I don’t have to suffer the same as my family did, ” she told The Guardian.
“I witnessed my parents lose the very thing that gave them their fame and their life and their livelihood, when the industry rejected them at a certain age,” Curtis recalled. “I watched them reach incredible success and then have it slowly erode to where it was gone. And that’s very painful.”
Curtis further shared that she has taken control of her exit strategy. “I have been self-retiring for 30 years,” she admitted. “I want to leave the party before I’m no longer invited.”
Despite her plans for an early retirement, Curtis remains a sought-after star. She recently reprised her role in Freakier Friday, the sequel to the iconic 2003 comedy, alongside Lindsay Lohan. The film also features Julia Butters, Mark Harmon, and Chad Michael Murray.
Curtis also returned in Season 4 of FX’s hit series The Bear, reprising her role as Donna Berzatto. The emotionally complex mother of Jeremy Allen White’s character, Carmy. While Season 3 painted her as an abusive, volatile person, Season 4 was her redemptive arc as Donna attempts to reconnect with her children, despite their hesitation.
