Did Brad Pitt end his relationship with Gwyneth Paltrow because of her success?

A new biography offers insight into why Gwyneth Paltrow called off her engagement to Brad Pitt in the 1990s.

In Gwyneth: The Biography by Amy Odell, it is revealed that Paltrow was advised to break up with Pitt after repeated emotional struggles over their relationship. The relationship had become strained, with Pitt reportedly feeling insecure about Paltrow’s rising fame and public attention.

Odell wrote, “He wanted to be with her but seemed to feel threatened by her success and all the attention she received.” According to the book, makeup artist and close friend Kevyn Aucoin told her, “You really need to end this,” after seeing her break down in tears multiple times. (via PEOPLE)

The book also shares that while filming Emma in 1996, Paltrow began voicing doubts about her relationship with Pitt. She confided in a crew member that she wasn’t sure he was the right person for her and admitted to having a crush on actor Hugh Grant.

Paltrow and Pitt met in 1994 during auditions for Legends of the Fall. Though she didn’t land a part in that film, Pitt later recommended her for Se7en, where they played a married couple. Their romance developed on set, with the two often seen holding hands and spending time together between scenes. By December 1996, the couple had become engaged during a trip to Argentina. However, just six months after their engagement, the relationship ended.

Years later, during an appearance on the Call Her Daddy podcast, Paltrow reflected on their breakup. She described their initial connection as “major, major love at first sight” and said ending things had been incredibly painful. Still, she acknowledged that she was not emotionally ready at the time. She said, “I had a lot of development to do, looking back in hindsight.”
