Stephen Colbert Responds to Donald Trump’s Post About Late Show Cancellation

Stephen Colbert didn’t hold back after President Donald Trump celebrated the cancellation of The Late Show. This latest beef comes after CBS announced that the show is running its last season and will end by May 2026, citing financial strain; however, Colbert and many other fans beg to differ. Here’s what happened.

Stephen Colbert addresses Donald Trump’s post

Just days after CBS confirmed the Late Show would end next year, Donald Trump took to Truth Social and wrote, “I absolutely love that Colbert’ got fired. His talent was even less than his ratings.” Stephen Colbert had a clear and explicit response: “Go f— yourself.”

The comment, bleeped for broadcast, came during Monday night’s opening monologue. Colbert fully leaned into the controversy with a mock-serious segment labeled “Eloquence Cam.” Looking straight into the camera in a faux New York accent, the host delivered the now-viral insult, prompting loud cheers and chants from the studio audience.

Colbert also addressed Trump’s claim that Jimmy Kimmel could be next to lose his show. “Nope, no, no,” Colbert said, joking that he’s the lone “martyr” in the late-night world. “There’s only room for one on this cross, and the view is fantastic from up here.”

While Colbert maintained his trademark comedic tone, he didn’t hide his frustration over The Late Show’s cancellation. CBS cited financial reasons, though the host questioned that explanation. “How could it purely be a financial decision if The Late Show is number one in ratings?” he asked. The Late Show host pointed to a “gracious anonymous leak” to the New York Post. It claims the program lost up to $50 million annually. All in all, it suggests that some of those funds conveniently went toward the $16 million settlement CBS’s parent company paid to Trump earlier this month.

That payout settled Trump’s lawsuit over a 60 Minutes interview with Kamala Harris, which he alleged had been deceptively edited. Colbert had previously referred to the deal as “a big, fat bribe.” Basically, implying that CBS might be making peace with Trump to help secure government approval for its upcoming merger with Skydance Media.

As supporters gathered outside the Ed Sullivan Theater, chanting “Trump must go, Colbert must stay,” the message from both the crowd and the host was clear: Stephen Colbert isn’t backing down.
