Preta Gil cause of death explained
Brazilian singer and actress Preta Gil has died at the age of 50, according to a report by Quem. Gil passed away on July 20, 2025, in the United States while undergoing treatment for colorectal cancer.
She was first diagnosed in January 2023, and the illness went into remission later that year. However, in August 2024, the cancer returned and spread to four areas: two lymph nodes, a metastasis in the peritoneum, and a nodule in the ureter.
Preta Gil, born Preta Maria Gadelha Gil Moreira, was the daughter of Gilberto Gil, the musician and former Minister of Culture in Brazil. She was also the goddaughter of Gal Costa and referred to Caetano Veloso as “uncle.” Her mother, Sandra Gadelha, was nicknamed “Drao,” which Preta had tattooed on her arm, and is the title of her father’s song that she called her favorite.
Before entering music, Preta launched a successful marketing company. She began her music career at 28, inspired by recurring dreams about her late brother, Pedro, who died in a car accident in 1990. Her discography includes four studio albums — Prêt-à-Porter (2003), Preta (2005), Sou Como Sou (2012), and Todas as Cores (2017). She also released two live albums and 18 singles, including “Decote” featuring Pabllo Vittar and “Vá Se Benzer” with Gal Costa.
Preta also appeared on Brazilian television, including Cheias de Charme, Pé na Cova, Caminhos do Coração, Os Mutantes, and the film Ó Pai Ó.
Preta Gil actively fought against racism and advocated for LGBTQ+ rights, women’s rights, and body positivity. Her son, Francisco, and granddaughter Sol de Maria, survive her.
