Emma Watson Gets Banned From Driving After Speeding

Emma Watson has been banned from driving after being caught speeding. Last year, the Harry Potter alum drove above the speed limit in a 30 mph zone in Oxford. This is the 35-year-old’s fourth and latest driving offence, after three previous offences.

Authorities recently banned Emma Watson from driving for six months. An automatic camera caught her speeding in her £30,000 Audi, which authorities towed away, at 38 mph in a 30 mph zone in Oxford on July 31, 2024.

The Little Women was sentenced at High Wycombe Magistrates’ Court, where she was ordered to pay a fine of £1,044. However, she did not attend the five-minute hearing.

Watson received three penalty points on her driving license. According to the courts, she had previously accumulated nine penalty points from three driving offences. These offences took place in October and November 2023 and January 2024 (via The Daily Mail).

Thus, she has accumulated a total of 12 penalty points. In the United Kingdom, authorities can ban you from driving for six months if you accumulate a total of 12 penalty points within three years. Moreover, as per the UK government, the driving ban can extend to 12 months if you receive a second disqualification within three years. Furthermore, the ban can extend to two years if you receive a third disqualification again within three years.

Mark Haslam represented the Beauty and the Beast star in court. The latter stated that Watson “fully understands her position and will accept her punishment” (via This Is Oxfordshire).

He also requested that the court give the Harry Potter icon “credit for the plea of guilty,” reasoning that she was a student. They added, “She is a lady in a position to pay an appropriate fine.” In 2023, Watson started pursuing a master’s degree in creative writing at the University of Oxford. In February 2025, the university announced that she was pursuing a DPhil, the Oxford equivalent of a PhD.

Zoe Wanamaker, Watson’s co-star from the Harry Potter franchise, also received a fine on the same day and in the same court. Police caught the 76-year-old actress speeding on the M4 in Newbury, Berkshire, on August 7, 2024. She had been driving her blue Volvo at 46 mph in a 40 mph limit.
