With the Boston Celtics making big roster changes following Jayson Tatum‘s devastating Achilles injury, it looks like the most successful team in NBA history could add yet another veteran to their roster in the form of Damian Lillard. A recent report suggests that Tatum is currently holding talks with Lillard to bring him to the TD Garden.
Jayson Tatum is eyeing Damian Lillard to the Celtics
During his recent appearance on the Garden Report podcast, Celtics insider Gary Washburn noted that Jayson Tatum is presently working with nine-time NBA All-Star Damian Lillard to potentially facilitate a move to Boston.
“I just was told that they’re communicating and Tatum is recruiting,” Washburn claimed in the said podcast. He continued, “Tatum is the face of the franchise. So, yeah, you’re told he’s recruiting. I don’t know if they’re like FaceTiming every day, or they’re on Snapchat and sharing videos. Like, I don’t know if it’s that deep… But they are communicating, and I think we all know Tatum’s going to be here for a long time.”
Just like Jayson Tatum, Damian Lillard is also recovering from an acute Achilles injury. The former Trail Blazers star sustained the injury during the Milwaukee Bucks’ first-round playoff series against the Indiana Pacers in the 2024-25 NBA postseason. As such, the Bucks decided to waive the 35-year-old point guard, sending him to the free agent market for the first time in his illustrious career.
While Lillard has yet to make a decision regarding where he would like to spend the twilight of his NBA career, Washburn’s comments suggest that Tatum might just be able to convince him to join forces with the Celtics. “He’s open to new teams, and obviously, he wants to win a championship. The only thing he does not have in his career is a title,” the seasoned reporter noted.
