Born on January 19, 1980, Kovalev hails from Komsomolsk-on-Amur, Russian SFSR, Soviet Union. He began dancing at the age of eight and moved to the US with his dance partner, Anya Garnis. The two emerged as finalists of the US Open from 2002 to 2006. Additionally, they participated in So You Think You Can Dance Season 3, where Kovalev made it to the semifinals, while Garnis finished in the top 12. In the following seasons, they returned as All-Stars or choreographers.

Further, Pasha Kovalev participated in Strictly Come Dancing in multiple seasons. He emerged as the winner of Series 12 and the runner-up of Series 9, 10, and 16. Additionally, he and Garnis have performed on Dancing with the Stars, Superstars of Dance, and guest-choreographed So You Think You Can Dance Australia Season 3. Moreover, Pasha Kovalev has done numerous live tours, including headlining the So You Think You Can Dance Season 3 Live Tour and his own show, An Evening with Katya and Pasha.
