Dakota Johnson set to make her directorial debut

Dakota Johnson revealed in a recent interview at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival that her directorial debut movie was a project “very close to her heart.” The upcoming feature is a collaboration with her Cha Cha Real Smooth co-star Vanessa Burghardt, who worked on the film’s screenplay.

“I’ve always felt that I’m not ready to direct a feature,” the Fifty Shades of Grey star told Variety, adding that she wasn’t confident about doing it. However, she clarified that it wasn’t the case with this film due to Burghardt’s involvement. She stated that she feels “very protective” of the latter and knows her “very well.”

“I can see this world, so I just won’t let anybody else do it. That’s the real answer,” Johnson added. In the interview, she also offered some insight into her work as a producer. She shared that she greatly cared about how people got along on set and collaborated.

“If there’s not a healthy collaboration, if it’s not a good match, then it’s not a good match,” she said. The Madame Web star stressed that they wouldn’t move ahead with production if the individuals they brought together weren’t “a good match.”

“I can’t waste time on toxic sets anymore, or in situations that are not fun or fulfilling or healthy,” she continued. “That’s one of the perks of [producing], because I get to put amazing people together and make something.”

Johnson revealed in a Kering Women in Motion conversation at Cannes alongside producing partner Ro Donnelly that the movie was about a young woman suffering from autism. She praised the script, saying it was “really special” (via Deadline).

The actress previously helmed a short film as well, titled Loser Baby. It starred Talia Bernstein, Chelsea Frei, and Jessy Hodges.
