The news of Diogo Jota’s death has left the soccer and sports community in shock. The Liverpool forward passed away near Zamora, Spain, in the early hours of July 3. The tragedy comes just two weeks after Jota married longtime partner Rute Cardoso, with whom he had three young children.

Diogo Jota cause of death explained

As per reports, Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva died in a car crash near Zamora, Spain. The 28-year-old Portugal international was traveling in a Lamborghini that veered off the A-52 highway after a tire blowout and burst into flames.

The Portuguese Football Federation released a statement confirming the devastating news of the deaths of two young stars. The statement said, “We have lost two champions. Their deaths represent irreparable losses for Portuguese football, and we will do everything we can to honour their legacy every day.” (via Reuters)

The heartbreaking news of Jota’s death has prompted an outpouring of grief and mourning on social media among Liverpool fans. The 28-year-old had recently celebrated his wedding to his longtime partner, Rute Cardoso, on June 22.

Meanwhile, Jota had also been integral to Liverpool’s Premier League title-winning campaign in recent years. In 2024, the Portuguese soccer star opened the scoring in Liverpool’s first match under new manager Arne Slot, netting in a 2-0 victory at Ipswich Town on August 17.

Later, the forward reached a personal milestone on October 5, marking his 100th start for the club with the winning goal against Crystal Palace. Despite battling form and fitness issues throughout the campaign, Jota had delivered in crucial moments.

His contributions proved vital as Liverpool secured the 2024-25 Premier League title on April 28. The recent win had added a fourth trophy to Jota’s collection with the club. Even while delivering some of the best performances of his life, Jota’s humble nature had always impressed fans.

Speaking of his wins, the soccer player had once told Sky Sports, “I try to be in the right place at the right time and that’s why I work” (via The Analyst).
