Wondering if Anna Wintour is really stepping down from Vogue? The longtime editor-in-chief has led the magazine since 1988, transforming it into a global fashion authority. After reports surfaced about a leadership change at Vogue, questions began circulating online about Wintour’s future at the publication. But what exactly is changing?
Here’s what we know about Anna Wintour’s new role at Condé Nast and the facts behind her exit from day-to-day duties at Vogue US.
Is Anna Wintour stepping down?
Anna Wintour is stepping back from her role as editor-in-chief of American Vogue after 37 years, as confirmed in a staff meeting held on June 26, 2025. She will remain at Condé Nast as global chief content officer and global editorial director for Vogue, overseeing multiple international titles.
Vogue will appoint a new head of editorial content to handle the publication’s daily operations. This role, which mirrors similar positions at other global Vogue editions, will report directly to Wintour. Her expanded responsibilities now include leading all Condé Nast brands globally except The New Yorker, which is overseen separately.
Wintour became Vogue’s editor-in-chief in 1988, succeeding Grace Mirabella. Her debut cover featured Michaela Bercu in jeans and a Christian Lacroix sweater, breaking conventions at the time. Throughout her career, she reshaped Vogue by putting celebrities on covers, co-chairing the Met Gala, and launching initiatives like the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund.
“Anybody in a creative field knows how essential it is never to stop growing in one’s work,” Wintour told staff. “Now, I find that my greatest pleasure is helping the next generation of impassioned editors storm the field with their own ideas” (via Vogue.)
Despite stepping back from daily operations, Wintour will continue overseeing major events and projects, including Vogue World and the Met Gala. She also stated, “I plan to remain Vogue’s tennis and theater editor in perpetuity.”
Vogue has not yet named her successor. Industry insiders continue to speculate about who will take on the highly coveted role in fashion journalism.
