Brad Pitt says Se7en pulled him out of the ‘most unhealthy time’ of his life
Brad Pitt recently opened up about a turning point in his career, when he rediscovered his love for acting through David Fincher’s movie, Seven. During a candid conversation on Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast, the actor revealed that the summer of 1994 was one of the lowest and “most unhealthy time” of his life.
At the time, Pitt had just wrapped a series of blockbuster projects that left him feeling unfulfilled. He revealed, “I would wake up. I would get a bong load. I would have four Coca-Colas on ice, no food. This particular summer, I watched the O.J. trial, and I was just trying to figure out, ‘What do I do next? What do I do next?’”
It was during that time that Pitt’s manager and close friend, Cynthia Pett-Dante, sent him the script for a new movie, Seven. At first glance, he wasn’t impressed. However, Pett-Dante pushed him to finish the script, and he eventually agreed to meet with Fincher. The actor said, “I read the first seven pages. I call her up, I go, ‘Are you kidding me?’ She goes, ‘Just finish it.’”
After finishing the script, Pitt met with director David Fincher, and that meeting turned out to be crucial. He recalled, “Then I go meet with Finch, and he was just talking about films like I’d never heard anyone speak about film. I just got the jones back.” The actor added, “Finding that thing kind of… It just reinvigorated what I wanted out of this thing.”
Released in 1995, Seven became one of the most acclaimed psychological thrillers in modern cinema. The film starred Pitt alongside Morgan Freeman, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Kevin Spacey. It followed two detectives chasing a serial killer whose crimes are inspired by the seven deadly sins.
