George Takei and his husband, Brad, have been married for about 17 years, making many curious about their relationship timeline. Takei is a noted actor, popularly known for playing Hikaru Sulu in the Star Trek franchise. During the 1980s, he worked as a financial journalist. However, after meeting his now-husband, he became his business partner, helping him out with “public relations, press releases, and various projects,” as mentioned by him on Oh Myyy Pod! In 2009, the two participated as the first gay couple in The Newlywed Game. Takei and Brad also teamed up to shoot their documentary called To Be Takei.

In a conversation with The Wrap, Brad shared details on what the audience could expect from their documentary. He said the goal was to allow “access into our private lives to show fair-minded Americans that a same-sex couple, this is like everyone else in our culture dominated by opposite-sex couples.” In 2014, the pair won the International Vanguard Award for their LGBTQ+ work.

George Takei and Brad’s relationship history explained

Takei and Brad first met in the 1980s. At the time, Takei had not publicly disclosed his sexual orientation; however, he became a member of the LGBTQ+ running club, L.A. Frontrunners, of which Brad was also a part.

In conversation on Oprah: Where Are They Now?, Takei revealed that his now-husband was the “best runner” in the club. He further shared that that’s why he once approached him and asked if he would train him for his first marathon. In 2005, Takei publicly came out, and then he married Brad in 2008.
