Curious why Leighton Meester’s music career has suddenly become a topic of conversation again? Though the Gossip Girl star once dabbled in pop music and even released her own album, she quietly stepped away from the scene years ago. Now, she’s opening up about why she left it behind — and what she’s focused on instead.
Here’s what Meester revealed about quitting music and what she’s doing now.
Leighton Meester addresses her music and singing career
Leighton Meester says she stepped away from her music career because she didn’t feel confident in her singing ability.
In a recent interview with Bustle, the Gossip Girl star admitted, “I just didn’t feel like I sang that well in those songs… That was something that I figured out in my 20s.” She explained that discomfort with pop songwriting and performance led her to stop pursuing music professionally.
Meester first entered the music scene in 2009, collaborating with Cobra Starship on “Good Girls Go Bad.” That same year, she released the singles “Somebody to Love” and “Your Love’s a Drug.” In 2010, she starred as a rising singer in Country Strong. Her debut album Heartstrings, which she wrote herself, arrived in 2014 with nine original songs.
Despite a recent uptick in attention after Flavor Flav shouted out her music, Meester confirmed she has no plans to return to the recording booth. “I didn’t feel really good when I would sing it,” she reiterated to Bustle, adding that she’s focused on roles where “there is that feeling of: there could be a future there.”
She is currently experiencing a resurgence onscreen with key roles in the streaming series. Meester plays Abby, a mommy influencer and former nemesis of Kristen Bell’s character in Netflix’s Nobody Wants This Season 2. The series also stars her husband Adam Brody. Showrunner Erin Foster praised Meester’s comedic timing and improvisation during a table read, saying, “I don’t think people understand how funny she is.”
Alongside her acting work, Meester prioritizes raising her two children. She recently appeared at Paris Fashion Week, attending the Elie Saab Womenswear Fall/Winter 2025–2026 show on March 8, 2025.
