Jennifer Lawrence addresses motherhood and postpartum
At the recent Cannes press conference for Die, My Love, Jennifer Lawrence explained how her own motherhood factored into the portrayal of her character in the film.
“As a mother, it was really hard to separate what I would do as opposed to what she would do,” Lawrence said, adding, “And it was just heartbreaking.” The Silver Linings Playbook actress then described how postpartum felt following the birth of her first child with Cooke Maroney in 2022, calling it “extremely isolating.” (via Variety)
“When Lynne moves this couple into Montana, she doesn’t have a community. She doesn’t have her people,” Lawrence added. “But the truth is, extreme anxiety and extreme depression is isolating, no matter where you are. You feel like an alien,” she further stated.
Jennifer Lawrence then revealed that she had been pregnant with her second child while filming Die, My Love, and opened up about how the birth of her kids changed “everything.” She welcomed her second child with Maroney in March 2025, as per People.
“It changes your whole life. It’s brutal and incredible,” Lawrence added. The No Hard Feelings actress then shared that her children factored into her work decisions. She also noted that they changed her “creatively.” “I highly recommend having kids if you want to be an actor,” Lawrence added.
Robert Pattinson, who was also part of the press conference, shared how it was “incredibly difficult” for a husband to “figure out” his role in a relationship with a wife, following a child’s birth. He noted that his character in the film didn’t “have the vernacular” to provide support.
Echoing Lawrence’s views about parenthood and how it changes a person, Pattinson also said that his daughter’s birth “reinvigorated the way” he approached acting. Further, he noted how he was “a completely different person the next day.”
Die, My Love premiered at Cannes on May 17, 2025.
