Dick Van Dyke has opened up about his longtime relationship with wife Arlene Silver, sharing rare details about their 13-year marriage. Now, Van Dyke is addressing the doubts they faced—and what has kept their bond strong over the years.

What did Dick Van Dyke say about wife Arlene Silver?

Dick Van Dyke, 99, recently spoke to PEOPLE about his 13-year marriage to Arlene Silver, 53. He said, “Everybody said it wouldn’t work,” referring to their age gap and public skepticism. Van Dyke added, “We get along so well,” highlighting their compatibility, while Silver remarked, “It’s like eerie how well it works. People the same age don’t last.”

Van Dyke first met Silver in 2006 at the SAG Awards, where she worked as a makeup artist. “I never said hello to a strange girl in my life,” he recalled, adding that something about Silver compelled him to introduce himself. He later hired her for additional projects, and the couple married in 2012.

During the Vandy Camp event held at Aviator Nation Dreamland in Malibu, which supported the Los Angeles Emergency Preparedness Foundation, Silver shared insights into their life together. “We just love being home. We love Malibu, and it’s our favorite place,” she said, adding that the Franklin fire hit their home but it avoided major damage.

Silver described their relationship as “very supportive,” and said the Vandy Camp event reflected their shared values. The couple also attended the 2024 Daytime Emmy Awards. They have made several other public appearances, including the 43rd Annual Kennedy Center Honors in 2021 and the premiere of If You’re Not in the Obit, Eat Breakfast in 2017.

As Van Dyke noted, “I’m seven months from a hundred,” he continues to publicly express admiration for his wife and the strength of their partnership.
