Bobby Brown is making waves online after giving a scathing review of Britney Spears‘ rendition of his song “My Prerogative.” The rapper recently made an appearance on Shannon Sharpe’s podcast Club Shay Shay on April 16, where he gave his thoughts on the pop hit, among other personal anecdotes.
Here’s everything to know about Bobby Brown’s comments on Britney Spears and netizens’ reactions to them.
What did Bobby Brown say about Britney Spears?
During one point in the conversation with Sharpe, the rapper got unapologetically candid about Britney Spears’ cover of his 1988 hit “My Prerogative.” The cover is one of Spears’ most well-known tracks from her discography. However, Bobby Brown is in disagreement, saying he did not like the rendition.
The topic opened with Shannon Sharpe asking Brown which artist he thought did the best sampling of his songs. Brown promptly replied, “I don’t think they did justice. I don’t think they really did justice to any of the samples that they have done to my songs.” The rapper then referred to Spears’ version, asserting that, “Britney Spears butchered ‘My Prerogative.’ ” He added, “Teddy Riley produced it. But that was a butchering. I couldn’t take it.” Sharpe soon countered that Brown himself had given the green light for the cover, to which the rapper said that he only cleared it because he felt certain that Spears would “wow” him.
The internet, however, disagrees with Brown’s opinion, saying that Britney Spears’ rendition of the song remains a smash hit among fans. One user wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “Ngl Britney Spears’ version was so fire most didn’t realize it was a cover ??♀️??♀️??♀️” Another chimed in, “Bobby Brown really said Britney Spears butchered Prerogative despite him clearing the song. I DISAGREE WHOLEHEARTEDLY.” Popular opinion preferred Spears’ version to that of Brown’s original, with one user commenting, “Listen, I get it. I would also be mad if someone did a cover of my song and did it so much better than I did that everyone thought my song was theirs ?♂️.”
An insider source from the music industry gave their thoughts on Brown’s comment. They told People, “He’s looking for press, but that’s his prerogative.” Spears has yet to make any statements regarding the matter.
