The duo first met in 1993. At the time, the “Honky Cat” singer was living in Windsor, England, and wanted to meet new people to socialize. John recalled his first impression of Furnish in a Parade Magazine interview where he gushed over his partner’s self-sufficiency.

The singer confessed, “He had a real job, his own apartment, and a car. He was independent. I didn’t need to take care of him. I thought, ‘God, this is new territory for me. Someone wants to be with me just because he likes me.’ I knew he was the one because he is not afraid of me. He always tells me exactly what he thinks.”

David Furnish is a former advertising executive and filmmaker.

The Canadian director worked at the advertising agency Ogilvy & Mather at the beginning of his career. Later, he asked the firm for a transfer to the UK. The decision worked out perfectly for Furnish, who reportedly became the firm’s youngest Director of Account Services (via Toronto Star).

As a director and producer, Furnish worked on diverse genres of films. He started as a director with the documentary film Elton John: Tantrums & Tiaras in 1997. Some of his most prominent works as a producer include Gnomeo & Juliet, Sherlock Gnomes, It’s a Boy Girl Thing, and Rocketman.

Elton John and David Furnish’s relationship explained

Elton John and David Furnish welcomed their first child, Zachary Jackson Levon Furnish-John, via a surrogate in December 2010. The duo welcomed their second child, Elijah Joseph Daniel Furnish-John, via the same surrogate in early 2013.

Furnish shared the joy of fatherhood with PEOPLE, sharing, “All we hope is that Zachary and Elijah are healthy and happy.” He further added, “They will always be able to rely on us for total love and support, and we hope they grow up to live their own lives and be who they want to be, not who we want them to be.”
