Helen Mirren recently criticized James Bond‘s characterization in the films, accusing the 007 franchise of sexism. Her remarks sparked widespread debate among fans, who questioned whether the 79-year-old Dame’s viewpoints were valid. Now, Pierce Brosnan, one of the iconic actors to portray Bond, has weighed in on the matter.
Curious about Pierce Brosnan’s response to Helen Mirren’s take on James Bond? Here’s everything you need to know.
Pierce Brosnan reacts to Helen Mirren’s James Bond comment
Speaking to People at the New York City premiere of his and Helen Mirren’s new Paramount+ series, MobLand, Pierce Brosnan was asked about Mirren’s opinion on James Bond—and he agreed with her statements.
“She let them have it,” The Mamma Mia! actor replied. He also noted that he and Mirren have not discussed the latter’s views of the 007 franchise at all.
Brosnan added that there was a “certain agreement” when it came to Mirren’s criticism. However, he acknowledged that there was a “certain world and room to move within the proscenium arch” of what Ian Fleming created. Brosnan noted that Bond’s characterization would always be a source of conflict.
Helen Mirren’s criticism of James Bond took place in a recent interview with The London Standard. Mirren, whose late cousin Tania Mallet, played a Bond girl, Tilly Masterson in 1964’s Goldfinger, starring Sean Connery’s James Bond, admitted she was never “a great ward of Bond,” and that it was not her “thing.” She expressed her dislike for both the Bond character and the way women were depicted in films starring 007.
“The whole concept of James Bond is drenched and born out of profound sexism,” the Fast and Furious actress added. She also opposed the idea of a project centered around a female version of the character in favor of “real stories of women in espionage from history.”
Mirren’s views on James Bond don’t seem to have affected her professional relationship with Brosnan. In a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, Brosnan mentioned that he and Mirren formed a friendship “over the last year,” something that was “completely unexpected” for the actor.
