His role remained a mystery for most of the season, keeping fans intrigued. However, the wait ended on March 21, when McHale appeared in Episode 7, titled “Croak.”

The previous episode, “Thanksgiving (Canada),” ended with two unsuspecting strangers catching the Yellowjackets in the middle of their ritualistic feast on Coach Ben Scott’s corpse. Episode 7 reveals that the strangers weren’t just ordinary hikers but researchers named Edwin and Hannah. McHale makes his appearance as Kodi, the couple’s wilderness guide. The pair are biologists researching the Arctic Banshee Frog, the creatures responsible for the screeching sound heard by the Yellowjackets.
While the researcher couple is much more open, Kodi, on the other hand, remains a mysterious presence. A man of few words, Kodi exudes an intimidating aura that stands out even more due to the scar marks on his body. Needless to say, the character is a sharp departure from McHale’s usual comedic on-screen roles. However, he has taken on a serious role before when he joined The Bear cast as Carmy’s abusive executive chef, David.
Soon after we see Kodi, Edwin, and Hannah finally stumble upon the Yellowjackets, as shown in the Episode 6 climax. The horrific encounter turns violent in no time, resulting in Edwin’s murder at the hands of Lottie. Hannah and Kodi flee the scene, chased by the Yellowjackets, but when they decide to go their separate ways, Kodi ends up being caught by Travis and Akhila. The episode ends with Travis making a shocking decision to seek Kodi’s help, marking the beginning of a power shift that could potentially kickstart an exciting new arc.
