American Idol: Why Did Katy Perry Leave the Show?

Curious about why Katy Perry decided to leave American Idol after seven seasons? Her departure from the long-running singing competition surprised fans, sparking questions about her reasons for leaving and what she plans to do next. As Season 23 begins with a new judge at the table, many are wondering how the show will move forward without her.

Here’s why Katy Perry chose to leave American Idol and what she has been up to since.

Here’s why Katy Perry left American Idol after Season 7

Katy Perry announced in February 2024 that she would be leaving American Idol after seven seasons. During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, she confirmed Season 22 would be her last, stating, “I mean, I love Idol so much. It’s connected me with the heart of America, but I feel like I need to go out and feel that pulse to my own beat.”

Perry joined American Idol in 2018 alongside Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan. Richie later told People in April 2024, “I think as it goes on, Luke and I will probably get together and realize that we’re going to kidnap her.” Perry’s departure surprised fans, as she was known for her bold fashion and encouragement of contestants.

Perry left to focus on other projects, including new music. “I’ve been in the studio for a while so [Richie and Bryan] figured something is coming,” she said on Jimmy Kimmel Live! In July 2024, she released “Woman’s World” from her album 143, which debuted in September. (via People)

During her final American Idol episode in May 2024, Perry performed “What Makes a Woman” with contestant Jack Blocker while wearing a gown featuring the faces of 160 former contestants. She later shared photos on Instagram, captioning them, “There it is… 7 years.”

In August 2024, Good Morning America announced Carrie Underwood as Perry’s replacement. Underwood, who won American Idol in 2005, said, “There’s so many people that even still work on the show that were there when I was a contestant.”

Since leaving American Idol, Perry has actively pursued her music career. In January 2025, she announced her Lifetimes Tour, which will feature 83 shows. She will also participate in an 11-minute space flight in spring 2025 alongside CBS Mornings host Gayle King.
