Rapper Shaboozey, whose birth name is Collins Obinna Chibueze, and singer-songwriter Megan Moroney appeared on the stage of the AMAs 2025 to present the Favorite Country Duo or Group accolade. While reading the teleprompter, Moroney made a comment about country music’s history that drew a sharp reaction from her co-presenter.

Shaboozey and Moroney took the stage on the night of Monday, May 26, to give away the AMA award in the Favorite Country Duo or Group category. The former started the segment by reading the following from the teleprompter, “Country music has been an important part of AMA history. The very first year of this show, the award for favorite male country artist went to the great Charlie Pride.”
It was then Moroney’s turn. She read, “That same year, favorite female artist went to Lynn Anderson, and this award went to the Carter family, who basically invented country music.”
This remark seemed to draw Shaboozey’s attention. He glanced at Moroney from the corner of his eye and let out a laugh before continuing with the presentation. “This year’s AMA nominees in that category are very impressive and include a few of our friends, he added, prompting Mororney to supply, “So, Shaboozey and I are rooting for all of them. Check them out.”
Notably, the Carter family is one of the most venerated musical acts of all time. The folk group is widely considered the first true country music stars and has left behind an immense legacy, which continues to inspire musicians even today.
This year, the nominees for the AMA Favorite Country Duo or Group Award were Old Dominion, Dan + Shay, Parmalee, The Red Clay Strays, and Zac Brown Band. Dan + Shay ultimately won the accolade.
