Now that Captain America: Civil War is finally out of the way – a funny thing to say about a movie we actually liked, but life does go on – we turn our attention to the other Marvel Studios movies on the horizon. Doctor Strange is coming out later this year, Spider-Man: Homecoming and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 are fast approaching, but what about Thor: Ragnarok? Hasn’t it been a while since we’ve had some serious news about that one, hasn’t it?
Marvel Studios apparently thought so. Just in time for the weekend they’ve dropped their official cast announcement, which not only features surprise actors but also surprising characters. Let’s check out who will be playing who in Taika Waititi’s Thor: Ragnarok, arriving in theaters on November 3, 2017.

Chris Hemsworth and Mark Ruffalo
Chris Hemsworth and Mark Ruffalo are, as previously revealed, returning as both Thor and The Hulk. The film is expected to be an extended team-up between the two heroes, the latter of whom hasn't had his own feature film since 2008.

Tessa Thompson
Tessa Thompson, who recently turned heads in Creed, will play the Marvel superhero Valkyrie. In the comics she became a member of the superhero series The Defenders, but that doesn't seem likely to happen in the MCU, since that name is being reserved for the studio's street level vigilantes on Netflix.

Cate Blanchett
As rumored, Cate Blanchett will play Thor: Ragnarok's new villain, Hela, the ruler of the Asgardian underworld. (In the original Norse mythology she was also Loki's daughter, but that may not be the case in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.)

Karl Urban
Karl Urban is playing the villain Skurge, an Asgardian enforcer who frequently finds himself the pawn of The Enchantress, but who has also worked for Loki and even been known to do a good dead once or twice.

Jeff Goldblum
Jeff Goldblum has been added to the cast as Grandmaster, who in the comics is one of the "Elders of the Universe." The Grandmaster is obsessed with games, and in the comics he has been since the dawn of time. It certainly seems plausible that he will be pitting Thor and The Hulk against each other, but that's just speculation for now.
