When Roger Ebert died at age 70 on April 4th of last year, he left a cultural void that – given the state of critical commentary nowadays (oh, hello Buzzfeed, we didn’t see you over there) – may never be filled. The most prominent film critic in America, and by extension the most prominent art critic in America, helped guide filmgoers into a superior understanding of the impact motion pictures and contemporary storytelling had on our own collective and individual lives.

That’s the goal of every art critic, of course, but the Ebert’s notoriety, acclaim, long-running TV series and credibility solidifying Pulitzer Prize – not to mention his talent – made him a figureheard worthy of his own documentary, Life Itself, opening in theaters Friday, July 4 and featuring interviews with Robert Ebert himself, his wife Chaz Ebert, fellow critics Richard Corliss, Jonathan Rosenbaum and A.O. Scott, and filmmakers Werner Herzog, Errol Morris, Gregory Nava and Martin Scorsese.
