The 2028 US presidential election is already drawing a ton of speculation. It’s sure to be a free-for-all as both parties struggle to find anchor candidates. Vice President Vance is assumed to be the favored Republican nominee, but a recent poll shows he might be in for some stiff competition if he’s matched up against a certain popular Democrat.
Poll shows AOC leads Vance in hypothetical 2028 presidential race matchup
In a new poll from The Argument/Verasight, New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez led Vice President JD Vance by two points in a hypothetical 2028 presidential matchup. The poll’s margin of error was +/- 2.7%, so the two candidates would be neck-and-neck in a real race.
However, despite her popularity in this poll, Ocasio-Cortez faces steep competition if she throws her hat into the 2028 Democratic Primary. In a recent Yale Youth Poll, she trailed behind both California Governor Gavin Newsom and 2024 Democratic Presidential Candidate and former Vice President Kamala Harris.
While these early polls suggest a tight 2028 race, no major candidates have been confirmed yet. Neither AOC nor Vance has committed to running for president, and a lot can happen in three years. US politics are incredibly volatile, and stars can rise and fall in the blink of an eye. Vance’s potential primarily rides on the success of the Trump administration, which continues to face scrutiny over immigration and economic woes. On the flip side, AOC’s success as a candidate depends on the inverse.
It looks like 2028 is shaping up to be a wild card election. Republican sentiment is faltering, but Democrats still haven’t found a center to rally around. If Trump endorses Vance, we may see him claim victory by inertia alone. However, it’s much too soon to be sure what’ll happen, and polls should be taken with a grain of salt for the next few years.
