Little House on the Prairie Reboot Gets Big Updates on 50th Anniversary

Major updates on Netflix’s Little House on the Prairie reboot were revealed during a recent cast reunion celebrating the franchise’s 50th anniversary. The gathering brought together members of the original cast and creative team. As the cast members reflected on the long-running show, the producers also shared fresh details about the new adaptation.

New details revealed about Little House on the Prairie reboot

New information has surfaced about Netflix’s upcoming Little House on the Prairie adaptation. The creative team outlined how the new series will be different from the original television classic.

During a recent public discussion, Trip Friendly, son of original series producer Ed Friendly, stressed that the project should not be viewed as a reboot. Instead, it should be viewed as a “new adaptation” of original Laura Ingalls Wilder’s novels.

He said, “My dream has always been to go back to the books, do a fresh adaptation, and also bring in the history of the period. I studied history in college, I love history. And I think that’s a very fascinating part of history, that era — 1860s, 1870s, 1880s” (via PEOPLE).

Friendly also addressed the casting process, noting that the search for the right Laura Ingalls was extensive. He said the team auditioned “a lot of potential Lauras and Marys” before deciding on Alice Halsey. Rebecca Friendly also praised Halsey’s performance, calling her mature and talented. “She just has really fully embraced the character of Laura,” she added.

Rebecca Friendly also confirmed that Melissa Gilbert, who portrayed Laura Ingalls in the original series, has expressed her support for the new adaptation. Talking about Gilbert, she said, “She’s been very supportive, and they met and had conversations.”

The update on the reboot was shared during a special event marking the 50th anniversary of the original series. The event featured appearances from original cast members. These included Karen Grassle, Alison Arngrim, Rachel Lindsay Greenbush, and Sidney Greenbush, among others.
