Hot Tub Time Machine Star on ‘Divine Order’ Required for Part 3

After nearly a decade of silence, Hot Tub Time Machine’s Craig Robinson has given an update on Part 3. The iconic comedy franchise, which began with the 2010 cult favorite about four friends who accidentally travel back to 1986 through a magical hot tub, could be preparing for a long-awaited comeback.

Craig Robinson says Hot Tub Time Machine 3 is ‘ready to go’

It’s been over 10 years since Hot Tub Time Machine 2 hit theaters, but according to franchise star Craig Robinson, the third movie might be closer than fans think. While promoting his upcoming Netflix film In Your Dreams, Robinson shared a hopeful update on the long-delayed sequel.

“It’s so ready to go, but that’s one of those things that have to, you know, Divine Order has to take place, or something,” Robinson told CBR. The actor revealed that while the cast remains busy, something beyond scheduling seems to be holding the project back. “Hot Tub Time Machine 2 just kind of happened, you know, called a meeting, and then next thing we were on our way.”

The first Hot Tub Time Machine became a modest hit in 2010, earning around $65 million on a $36 million budget and later building a cult following through home video sales. The success prompted a quick turnaround for the sequel, released in 2015. However, Hot Tub Time Machine 2 fell short both critically and commercially, making reportedly only $12.3 million domestically, which was less than the first film’s opening weekend.

That box office failure likely explains the long pause before any talk of a third film. Still, the creative team behind the franchise hasn’t given up hope. Back in 2022, Robinson told CinemaBlend that writer Josh Heald had “an idea for part three that is (does ‘mind blown’ movement) so I would like to see that happen.” In 2024, Heald told Syfy that the potential third installment would be “a bigger movie” exploring the concept of the multiverse.

While there’s no official confirmation on Hot Tub Time Machine 3, until then, fans can catch Craig Robinson in Netflix’s animated adventure In Your Dreams, where he voices Baloney Tony. It releases on the streaming platform on November 14.
