A new report suggests Paramount’s upcoming Call of Duty movie will unfold in a modern-day setting. Taylor Sheridan and Peter Berg are officially developing the live-action adaptation for the studio. The update follows renewed progress on the long-awaited project, which is being positioned as one of Paramount’s next major franchise ventures.
Call of Duty movie rumored to be set in modern day
According to a scoop shared by insider @MyTimeToShineHello on X (formerly Twitter), the film will take place in a modern-day setting. Sheridan, known for Yellowstone and Sicario, will write the screenplay, while Berg, recognized for Lone Survivor and Deepwater Horizon, will direct and co-write. Both will also produce the project alongside David Glasser of 101 Studios.
Sheridan’s involvement follows reports of his upcoming move from Paramount to NBCUniversal, but the studio secured his commitment before his departure. The Hollywood Reporter noted that the adaptation marks one of Paramount’s biggest franchise ambitions, aligning Sheridan and Berg’s expertise in grounded military and tactical storytelling with the long-running video-game series.
The Call of Duty franchise has sold over 500 million copies since its 2003 debut. It has remained the top-selling U.S. video-game series for 16 years. The games cover multiple eras, including World War II, Vietnam, the Cold War, and futuristic conflicts. The rumored modern-day setting would align with some of its most popular titles, such as Modern Warfare.
Paramount confirmed earlier this year that Sheridan and Berg would lead the project. The studio described it as its most high-profile game adaptation to date. Paramount has not announced any plot details or casting, but Sheridan and Berg are already co-writing the film, with Berg directing.
Sheridan and Berg previously collaborated on Hell or High Water and Wind River. Their reunion for Call of Duty comes as Paramount continues expanding its major-franchise lineup ahead of Sheridan’s NBCUniversal transition.
