A recall of over 140,000 bottles of a common cholesterol medication has been issued by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The medicine being recalled is Atorvastatin Calcium Tablets, which is a generic version of the more widely-known drug Lipitor and is sold in pharmacies nationwide. This statin is prescribed to prevent the formation of cholesterol in the arteries and the heart.
The FDA first issued the recall for Atorvastatin in September for “failed dissolution specifications,” meaning that the drug didn’t dissolve as intended in the body. But in October, a new FDA report has classified the recall as a Class II, suggesting that the tablets can cause more serious, though mainly reversible, health consequences.
